Nationals!

Nationals! Roughly a week ago, on a Thursday morning, at the crack of dawn, I found myself, along with 15 groggy teammates and five coaches, at Logan airport, awaiting the plane that would take us to Minneapolis en route to Waverly, Iowa, home to Wartburg College and the NCAA Division III Cross-Country Championships. As you may recall from where Maggie left off, our womens team qualified for nationals after placing fourth in New England, while the mens team qualified with a decisive victory. It was less than a week later we found ourselves, at 6:30AM, at the beginning of the end, ready to make the trip wed been preparing for all season. A plane ride and a time zone change later, we found ourselves in Minneapolis: There was snow! Were definitely not in Boston anymore After a three hour drive, we made it to Waverly, just in time to check out the course before the sun set. (Im going to refrain from the obvious commentary on the drive through Iowa-I come from a state that is also occasionally the butt of jokes so I wont go there. Except to say that the radio station we were listening to on our drive down was calledKOWZ.) Thursday night, the team enjoyed a meal at that most venerable of restaurants, the Olive Garden(there is something about the Olive Garden that draws cross-country teams like moths to a flame. Perhaps its because theyve colonized all but the farthest reaches of our nation, inescapable no matter where we travel to. In any case, Ive been to my fair share over the years). Claire 14 and Logan 13 await their pre-race pasta. On Friday we went to the course again, just to give it another going over. This time we made time for a photo op: The ladies at the course on Friday. In case you cant tell, it was pretty cold. Friday night brought the NCAA DIII XC banquet. It gave us an excuse to get all dressed up: The ladies, always classy. The guys. Apparently their outfits were the subject of quite the debate-this is in direct opposition to my previous claim. In any case, I have to say the grey sweaters turned out well. And then, it was Saturday. Meet day! While the craziness (like Maggie talked about at regionals, only MORE) went on around us, and the guys team raced (they got 12th! first New England team!): This is some serious dedication-remember how i said it was COLD? We stayed inside and tried to stay calm: Chilling, or as close as we could get to it, before the race. This was it. I mean, this was IT. All those summer workouts, morning pool sessions, mile repeats, and chocolate milks, and we were finally here. This was why we showed up to practice every day at 5PM. This was why we gladly gave up our Saturdays, our Friday nights. The last chance for us to race together. Our chance to prove that we could survive MIT and succeed at cross-country at the same time. For me, a last race as an Engineer. And what a race it was! The gun went off, and we ran. (Im going to forgo the action shots, because lets face it, nobody looks good when theyre racing). In a race as large as nationals, you cant know what your teammates are doing; the field is so large and so clumped together that all you can do is hope to hear snatches of names as spectators cheer. But every person counts; any opponent you pass can make the difference between being on the podium or off. After a fourth place finish at regionals, only two points behind third, we knew this too well. You also cant always know how youve finished, or how your team has done. As runners stream across the finish line, it is enough to try to find your teammates, to gather your exhausted crew and extract yourselves from the chaos that grows around the chute. So when my parents and teammates and coaches found us, excited and saying something about 4th place, I was mostly confused and a little overwhelmed. But then I looked at the scoreboard: The unofficial results! And it was true! Unofficially, we were fourth! Better than last year, when we had been ranked higher, had had higher expectations going in. It took the length of our cooldown for it to sink in to me-we had made the podium! But that wasnt all-as we were sitting inside Wartburgs gym, waiting for awards, one of our coaches came over and told us that after taking out individual places and recalculating, officially, we were third! Again, I didnt quite believe it. But then the announcer was announcing places and suddenly fourth place was called and no MIT. So third it was! The entire team, plus one very large trophy. The freshman runner friends (now all grown up?) celebrate our last race together. My parents! In high school, my dad never missed a meet and my mom volunteered at every home track meet, so it mean a lot for them to come out to my final race. It was also nice because they took home the stuff that wouldnt fit in my suitcase on the way back (like my hardware). But the day wasnt done. Our tireless coaches drove us all the way back to Minneapolis, where we ate dinner at the Mall of America and celebrated a successful close to the season. (Id like to take a moment here to thank Coach Taylor, Coach H, Coach Paterno, Coach Pete, and Coach Kate. Not only did they drive us all around Iowa and put up with our nonsense all weekend, but they worked harder then we did all season (and didnt even get to race!). They are the reason we had such a good season, and perhaps more importantly, stayed sane while aquajogging. (which is saying a lot!)) The girls team went shopping. (what? theres no Nordstrom in the city!) The guys went on the spongebob roller coaster. And then it was back to Boston. Up early again on Sunday morning, we returned to MIT, proud of our race (if not a little tired). Management, Personal and Study Skills Free Essays

In this section of my assessment for the Study Skills assignment, I will be producing a report, which will outline the contribution that I made within my group in our presentation on ‘Northern Ireland’. The presentation was conducted by a small group from the Business and Management Studies class in Lancaster. The group consisted of five individuals, namely Chris Gallagher, Peter Stephenson, David Long, Arif Patel and myself. We will write a custom essay sample on Management, Personal and Study Skills or any similar topic only for you Order Now The purpose of the presentation was to inform the audience of the main aims and objectives of the assignment, and educate the audience of the main findings of the written report and country analysis. Furthermore, the group believed that it would be beneficial to enlighten the audience of the conclusions and recommendations that we had made which related to the findings. Within the group, I contributed a great deal in the planning and writing up of the assignment. Our group communicated amongst itself both efficiently and effectively. Although we gathered on only the one occasion outside academic hours, this was extremely constructive as we were able to discuss and arrange the nine distinct sections of the presentation. The reason we were unable to meet up more often is due to the fact that I did not have any contact numbers for the people in my group. This is because I was initially intending to work with a group from the Business and Management Studies class in Carlisle, which is where I have been studying the module. However, due to certain circumstances this was altered. Despite such impediments, the presentation was successfully completed before the deadline date to the anticipated standard. In order to bring the presentation together, we firstly completed the written section of the assessment, in which we again as a group were required to conduct a country analysis of Northern Ireland, which would cover all the aspects mentioned subsequently in this report. Accordingly, we condensed the information contained in our assignments, and utilised the most important points in order to produce an effective presentation. Whilst completing the written section of the assignment, we met up on more than one occasion to complete the assessment. As a result of the meetings, we decided to make a PowerPoint presentation of our chosen island, which was Northern Ireland and the various applicable issues. Our presentation was required to last for no longer than fifteen minutes and no less than ten minutes. Upon completion of the presentation, it was apparent that most of our presentation ran according to plan and the learning outcomes that were outlined before the presentation had been met. During the group discussions, we chose to write about different aspects of Northern Ireland, namely the aims, the economic overview, the political stability and the primary export strengths. In the group, my role was to explicate the social issues in Northern Ireland. The presentation also included information on tourism, the transport infrastructure, the conclusion of our presentation and finally the recommendations we made on Northern Ireland. My role within the group of the nine sections comprised of the social issues and a point from the conclusion section in the presentation. Firstly, I decided to research the various social issues of Northern Ireland, and aimed to expand on a number of these issues. I investigated these certain aspects by using different types of research. The group decided on using OHT’s and Microsoft PowerPoint in order to communicate effectively with our audience. Therefore, the research, which I collected on the social issues of Northern Ireland, which was my role in the presentation, was put on both OHT’s and Microsoft PowerPoint. My role in the work of the group for the presentation involved introducing the facts of the social issues of Northern Ireland and writing up on one of the four points in the conclusion, which was linked to the social issues. I explained the four main social issues to the class and why these points exist. (See Appendix 1). The remaining sections were completed by the other members my group. We all contributed to reading the conclusion and recommendations’ slides in which we alternatively talked through all the points. Firstly, Craig Gallagher talked the class through the first two slides on the aims of Northern Ireland and the economic overview of the country, whereas David Long covered the political stability and the tourism sections. Peter Stephenson covered the section on the primary export strengths, leaving the transport infrastructure to Arif Patel. These members of the group also took certain points and went into detail when discussing their sections for the presentation. At the end of our presentation, we held a plenary session in which our audience were asked if they would like to ask any questions which could be answered on the different aspects which we discussed in our presentation. This demonstrated the audience’s understanding of the information presented. The structure of our presentation included the clear use of Microsoft PowerPoint and the use of OHT’s. this enabled the group to communicate more effectively with the audience, as it allowed visual aids to correspond with the verbal communication. The whole presentation was conducted around the use of the above in order for the audience to understand thoroughly the purpose of the presentation. I believe that my group successfully informed the class on our topic of Northern Ireland which we had chosen as a group with a mutual agreement. We chose our country from the list that had been given to us. As we held a plenary session towards the end of our presentation in which the class could ask our group questions, this allowed everybody a chance to express their views. All the discussions contained correct answers by the audience, which illustrated that we had covered all the topics effectively and resourcefully. If I was to carry out this particular, or any other, presentation in the future, I would ensure that my PowerPoint document is working well because in our presentation there was a problem with the PowerPoint, due to a technical hitch. This was the only aspect of the presentation which did not go according to plan. As a result of this, we were required to read off our print outs, which we had created in case of such circumstances. Another thing that I would change in the future is to be more organised and time efficient. This is due to the fact that we had to rush to put the presentation together, as we had all worked on our different sections of the assignment individually on our own. Therefore, when we met up we were required to organise our final piece, prior to the presentation. In addition, I feel that getting to know the members of a group and building a relationship between each other is essential, as it can cause some awkwardness when you do not know all the members. However, I was fortunate, as I knew some of them from my Economics class. Even though I did not know all of the members, we worked well together as a group and did not face any issues, which would have made it difficult for us to work as a team. To conclude this report, I feel that we were very successful in informing and motivating the class on our subject. The reason for this is that the class met the objectives, which we outlined at the beginning of our presentation and the met the criteria set in order to pass this section of the assignment. Before setting up a job, be sure that the workpiece, the table, the taper in the spindle, and arbor or cutter shank, are all clean and free from chips, nicks, or burrs. Keep lathe cutters sharp at all times. Do not change feeds or speeds while the lathe machine is in operation. Always turn on the coolant while doing the lathe process. This will reduce the total friction between the cuters and the workpiece. Never run a the lathe machine without the workpiece. When using clamps to secure the workpieces, be sure that they are tight and that the workpiece is held so that it will not spring or vibrate while it is being cut. Keep chips away from the workpiece; brush them out of the way by any convenient means, but do not do so by hand or with waste. NEVER remove chips with your bare hands. Use a stick or brush, and always stop the machine. Should it become necessary to operate the lathe while the ship is underway, be especially safety conscious. (Machines should be operated ONLY in relatively calm seas. ) VIII. 5. DISCUSSION From the activity that we done, we can sum up on several process that related to lathe machine. Points below explain the process of the lathe machine works on the workpiece. I. Turning A right-hand turning tool bit is shaped to be used from right to left. The cutting edge is on the left side of the tool bit and the face slopes down away from the cutting edge. The left side and end of the tool bit are ground with sufficient clearance to permit the cutting edge to bear upon the work piece without the heel rubbing on the work. The right-hand turning tool bit is ideal for taking light roughing cuts as well as general all-around machining. A left-hand turning tool bit is the just like right-hand turning tool bit, except that it’s the opposite. This tool bit is designed to cut when fed from left to right. The round-nose turning tool bit is very versatile and can be used to turn in either direction for roughing and finishing cuts. No side rake angle is ground into the top face when used to cut in either direction, but a small back rake angle may be needed for chip removal. The nose radius is usually ground in the shape of a half-circle with a diameter of about 1/32 inch. The right-hand facing tool bit is intended for facing on right-hand side shoulders and the right end of a work piece. The cutting edge is on the left-hand side of the bit, and the nose is ground very sharp for machining into a square corner. The direction of feed for this tool bit should be away from the center axis of the work, not going into the center axis. A left-hand facing tool bit is the opposite of the right-hand facing tool bit and is intend to machine and face the left sides of shoulders. Example of the process as shown in figure 5. Feed speed and depth of cut Cutting speed is defined as the speed at which the work moves with respect to the tool. Feed rate is defined as the distance the tool travels during one revolution of the part. The finish is determined by the cutting speed and feed, power requirements, and material removal rate. The primary factor in choosing feed and speed is the material to be cut. However, one should also consider material of the tool, rigidity of the work piece, size and condition of the lathe, and depth of cut. To calculate the proper spindle speed, divide the desired cutting speed by the circumference of the work. In considering depth of cut, its important to remember that for each thousandth depth of cut, the work diameter is reduced by two thousandth. Some calculation can be done to define the feed speed but there a few missing variable like the rotation per minute (RPM) of the lathe machine use. Industrial application The lathe is one of the engineers most valuable tools. Coupled with a milling machine or milling head (Tri-axis lathe) there is nothing that cannot be produced from virtually any kind of material.
